Memorial Day: Jack Hustis

Jack Hustis graduated from the Bay in 1942 and died prior to the second anniversary of his high school graduation.

College was never in the immediate cards for most male and many female graduates in the Class of 1942.

Jack grew up at 712 E. Henry Clay St. The house still exists between two apartment buildings.

Jack was the senior class president.

Jack was 2nd-Team All-Suburban in basketball in 1942.

Jack enlisted in the Army Air Corps in September, 1942.

He died on the second day of the Normandy invasion. Jack was last seen diving on a column of trucks in a strafing attack. He is believed to have bailed out. His body was found later.

Jack’s dying on his 37th piloting mission at age 20 years and six days is not something my mind is capable of processing.

I didn’t know until recently that Buckley Park exists.

Jack is buried in Normandy American Cemetery.
