The privileged few among us who had the skills, temperament, wits and coolness under pressure to win a trophy at the all-important annual Whitefish Bay Grade School Free Throw Tournament realize just how important it was as an accomplishment, cherished life-long, that steered us to prodigious success throughout our lives.
Perhaps the most interesting tournament occurred in 1948 when in the 5th grade competition Richards’ Herbert Schley took down Henry Clay’s Bob Nicolet in extra throws.

Fast-forward to 1955.

Herb’s free throw shooting percentage in this game was about the same as in the 5th Grade Tournament seven years earlier. But it worked out.
Another outstanding Bay athletic write-up! I will have to venture to the attic to see if my two second place trophies are there. When I’m gone they will likely be relegated to the trash bin

My mother threw away mine when they sold the Bay house.

I have all the track scores and times from the early 70s written by Earl Zamzow himself. This includes all the indoor track scores and records set by bay athletes. If you’re interested please email me. Thanks.
