The baystrack YouTube Channel

Yes, that’s right, the long-awaited and eagerly anticipated baystrack YouTube channel has finally arrived. With a whopping two videos.

The first is a heavily-edited 1970 Bay at Shorewood basketball game. It’s from a 16mm reel I bought on eBay about eight years ago for $10. I finally had it converted. It’s the Shorewood coaches film that was shot by the parents of two Shorewood players.

The second is from the 1971 football season where the Bay won the Suburban championship. The game footage is from the Waukesha game. I’ve previously discussed the 1971 football season at length: “Sad Day When We Lose A Man Like Rob Dean”

The 1970 Bay basketball team finished 10-8 in the Suburban, beat Homestead and Sussex Hamilton in the Regionals to get to the Sectionals held at the Bay. The Bay beat City Conference champions Milwaukee Marshall 63-61 in the Sectional semifinal before taking its third loss of the season to undefeated Wauwatosa East in the final 61-47.

For the 1970 season the Bay had new home uniforms which were the ugliest things imaginable. Fortunately, the picture is B/W so you can’t see the red striping on the jerseys, trunks and socks. And even worse, the jerseys went from the always classy and forever elegant “Bays” to the clunky and ridiculous “Dukes”.

The always stretched-for-cash Whitefish Bay taxpayers couldn’t afford new home and road uniforms in the same year, so the old white road uniforms were used that season. Sometimes, you catch a break.

The numbers were different. Here are the guys who played:

  • 10 Jerry Block (Sr)
  • 11 Steve Scroggins (Sr)
  • 12 Mike Burke (Jr)
  • 13 Pat Wherry (Sr)
  • 20 Tom Ebert (Jr)
  • 21 Tom Gotthart (Sr)
  • 30 Kevin Mathews (So)
  • 31 Paul Anderson (Jr)

This was rivalry weekend in the Suburban Conference. Waukesha (3900 students) was somehow able to overcome their rival West Milwaukee (700 students). 34 points in the 4th quarter against an over-matched foe is how the always classy Waukesha basketball program rolled.

Lots of editing was done, particularly in the first quarter. But most of the action is there. The “fight” was edited out. It was simply a couple of shoves, posturing and looking mean. Still, it’s a bummer it’s not there.

The video has some fun stuff about Homecoming, floats, painting windows on Silver Spring, etc.

The Waukesha game was played on an unseasonably warm, rainy night, so the Bay wore lighter new white road jerseys. About half of the numbers were different.
